Thanks, guys. I just got an update from my mother-in-law. She was in surgery from 2-4 am to drain the fluid, and they confirmed that it is indeed a staph infection. The doctor said it's unusual to see this level of infection without an obvious puncture wound, which they can't find. They may have to repeat the procedure in a couple days if the fluid build-up comes back, but for now she's on antibiotics and a morphine drip, so at least she's sleeping.
The doctor does seem to think that progress has been made, though, so that's good.
