1) Koko B. Ware pinned Danny Doring after a flying body press. **

2) Dick Hutton defeated Brutus Beefcake by submission with the abdominal stretch. DUD

3) Greg Valentine pinned Sabu with his feet on the ropes after Sabu missed a flying splash in the corner. DUD

4) Jimmy Snuka & Bruiser Brody gave The Vachons their first pinfall loss when Brody beat Butcher with the jumping knee drop. ***

5) Red Bastien beat Texas champion Justin Credible (subbing for the injured Sheik) by submission with a Boston Crab in a non-title match.

6) Buddy Rogers defeated Chris Candido by submission with the figure-four grapevine. Afterwards, Rogers was attacked by a masked man. Jimmy Snuka saved Rogers and pulled the mask off the man, revealing him to be Buddy Rose. **½

7) Antonio Inoki & Giant Baba defeated The Masked Superstar (subbing for the injured Bob Orton, Sr.) & Bob Orton, Jr. when Inoki pinned Orton after a top rope knee drop. Afterwards, Superstar and Orton attacked Inoki, causing him injuries to the back. ***¼

8) In a special attraction Andre the Giant beat Cousin Luke & Virgil pinning both men after giving Luke an atomic drop and slamming Virgil on top of Luke. DUD

9) USWA Southern Heavyweight champion Frank Gotch beat Ted DiBiase by submission with a guillotine choke. By virtue of his victory Gotch also won DiBiase’s fortune. George Hackenschmidt (who had been an ally of DiBiase’s at the time) came down and put him in the Russian Bear Hug. He then walked off with Gotch and Dick Hutton. **¾

10) The Midnight Express (Bobby Eaton & Dennis Condrey) beat USWA World Tag Team champions The Road Warriors by DQ when Animal hit Condrey with a chair. Following the bout, The Warriors gave Condrey the Doomsday Device, injuring his neck. ½*

11) Nick Bockwinkel retained the USWA World Heavyweight title defeating Harley Race in a 60-Minute Iron Man Match with Ed “Strangler” Lewis as the special guest referee. The order of falls was:
• Bockwinkel was disqualified for shoving Lewis at 3:20.
• Bockwinkel made Race submit to the Bockwinkel Sleeper at 7:18.
• Bockwinkel made Race submit to an abdominal stretch at 9:24.
• Race pinned Bockwinkel with a swinging neckbreaker at 11:16.
• Race pinned Bockwinkel with a piledriver at 13:18.
• Race scored a pin with a shoulder breaker at 14:34.
• Race scored another win with a swinging neckbreaker at 17:00.
• Race scored pins at 19:02 and 21:24 with the piledriver.
• Bockwinkel scored a pin with a back suplex at 23:18.
• Bockwinkel got a win with a sleeper at 25:10.
• Bockwinkel made Race submit to the figure-four leglock at 27:26.
• Race scored a pin with a diving head butt at 31:18.
• Race pinned Bockwinkel after a vertical suplex at 34:00.
• Race got a win at 36:16 with a swinging neckbreaker.
• Race pinned Bockwinkel at 39:04 with a cradle suplex.
• Bockwinkel got another fall with the sleeper at 41:30.

• Bockwinkel used the sleeper again to win at 50:42.
• Race scored another pinfall with a swinging neckbreaker at 54:12.
• Bockwinkel put Race down with the sleeper at 56:00.
• Bockwinkel pinned a groggy Race after choking him on the ropes at 57:16.
• Race scored a pin at 59:28 with a vertical suplex.
• Both men were tied at 13 wins each at the end of the match. The bout went into sudden death overtime. Bockwinkel made Race submit at 2:30 in the overtime to the figure-four leglock. Afterwards, Lewis challenged Bockwinkel to a title match. *****

1) Killer Kowalski pinned Virgil after a giant swing. ½*

2) Bobo Brazil pinned Gorgeous George after delivering SEVEN consecutive Coco Butts! ¾* (This is one of my all-time favorite matches, just for the crazy ass finish!)

3) Nick Bockwinkel made Red Bastien submit to the Bockwinkel sleeper. **

4) Buddy Rogers and Buddy Rose defeated The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkoff when Rogers made Volkoff submit to the figure-four grapevine. ****

5) Ted DiBiase defeated Hawk by submission with the Million Dollar Dream. ***½

6) In a first round match of the tournament to determine the first USWA World Tag Team champions, The Valiants defeated Ox Baker and The Sandman by DQ when Sandman hit Jimmy with his Singapore cane. **½

Matches 7 and 8 were the first matches in the first round of the tournament to crown the USWA World Heavyweight champion.

7) Johnny Valentine upset Frank Gotch by pinfall after an Atomic Skullcrusher. **

8) Harley Race pinned Giant Baba with a reverse rolling cradle after Baba missed a charge in the corner. ***

Bobo Brazil was stripped of the Southern Heavyweight title on April 17, 2004 after having his ankle broken by Buddy Rogers, Gorgeous George, and Buddy Rose (see Southern title history above). This tournament was to crown the new champion.

3) The Flying Redheads defeated The Killer "B"s (Brutus Beefcake & Buff Bagwell) in The "B"s' first match together, when Billy Red Lyons pinned Bagwell with a small package after Bagwell attempted a neckbreaker. ****½

4) In a special attraction, Killer Kowalski pinned Yukon Eric with a face claw. ****½

5) Buddy Rose upset Antonio Inoki after 2 Bombs Away. **¼

6) Giant Baba, Jimmy Snuka, & Bruiser Brody defeated The Midnight Express & Justin Credible when Brody pinned Bobby Eaton after a jumping knee drop. ****

7) In another special attraction, Johnny & Greg Valentine retained the AWA World Tag Team titles defeating Danny Doring & Cousin Luke when Greg made Doring submit to the figure-four leglock. *½

8) Dan Severn pinned Sabu in a No-Disqualification Match after a series of knee smashes to the head. ***

9) Ed “Strangler” Lewis defeated Bob Orton, Sr. by DQ when Orton punched referee Jerry Calhoun and gave Lewis a low kick. Afterwards, Lewis threw Orton down with the Strangler’s Headlock and held it on for several minutes. negative*

10) Rikidozan won the USWA World Heavyweight title from Nick Bockwinkel by pinfall after a hiplock. **

1) Buddy Rose defeated Greg Valentine by DQ when Cousin Luke interfered, pulled Rose off the top rope and executed a Hillbilly Drop. ***¼

2) Billy Red Lyons, Koko B. Ware, & S.D. Jones defeated Danny Doring, Cousin Luke, & Virgil when Ware pinned Doring after the Ghostbuster. *¼

3) Red Bastien defeated Rick Rude in his USWA debut by countout, after knocking Rude off the top rope with a dropkick, which knocked Rude to the arena floor. ***½

4) The Killer Bees beat The Killer "B"s (Brutus Beefcake and Buff Bagwell) when Jim Brunzell pinned Beefcake after dropkicking him into Capt. Lou Albano. **¾

5) Giant Baba defeated Justin Credible & Jim Cornette when he pinned Cornette after the neckbreaker drop. *½

6) In a special attraction return match, Killer Kowalski pinned Yukon Eric after a giant swing. ¾*

7) Sabu pinned Bobo Brazil after an Arabian facebuster and help from The Sheik. ****½

8) The Road Warriors defeated Jimmy Snuka & Bruiser Brody and USWA World Tag Team champions The Masked Superstar & King Kong Bundy in a Triangle Match for the titles. Superstar & Bundy were disqualified when Superstar hit Hawk with one of the title belts. The Warriors eliminated Snuka & Brody when Hawk pinned Snuka after a gut wrench suplex. The titles did not change hands, since the champions were not pinned or did not submit. ***

9) Frank Gotch made The Sheik submit to the Gotch Toehold in a No-Disqualification Match to retain the Southern Heavyweight championship. As a result of a pre-match stipulation, the loser (Sheik) would not receive another shot at the title as long as his opponent (Gotch) held the title. *****

10) Ed “Strangler” Lewis pinned Nick Bockwinkel after throwing him down with the Strangler’s Headlock. Bockwinkel suffered a concussion, hitting his head on the throw. **½

11) Rikidozan pinned Mil Mascaras after a hiplock to retain the USWA World Heavyweight championship. ****¼

This was a rare tournament that I ran last year, that wasn't for a title, but a shot at the World Heavyweight title. Part of the reason was there was no clear challenger at the time, as former champ Nick Bockwinkel had just gone down with an injury. I thought this would be a cool way for newcomer Lewis to get in the title picture, and lo and behold, it worked out for him!

TOURNAMENT TO DETERMINE #1 CONTENDER FOR THE USWA WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP

April 13, 2007: Freeman Coliseum in San Antonio
1) Greg Valentine defeated Frank Gotch

FINALS
Same night in Knoxville
Ed "Strangler" Lewis defeated Bruiser Brody to earn a title shot in May against Antonio Inoki in Nashville. (Inoki won that title bout after a series of karate kicks to the legs and a roundhouse kick. Lewis would win his first title in a rematch with Inoki on August 10 in Lexington.)
