ROH in Dearborn MI Recap by Swarm
Payback grabbed 2nd row center seats and view was perfect. Met Matt Sydal and Jay Lethal before the show and got their cards signed. Lethal let me know how much he loved his new art, and we agreed it was a big step up from his first color card. I told Sydal I had him feuding with Kevin Steen in my fed and he says "That could actually happen pretty soon..." so take that for what it's worth.
My pal "Judge" Jeff Jones is always a huge help with signings and such at these events.
The show started with a huge bang as the champ Jay Briscoe called out Mike Bennett and the World Title was defended In the first match of the night. Bennett was hilarious, doing a Colossus gimmick all match, using lots of famous moves from guys like CM Punk. John Cena and Edge, along with screaming their catch phrases. He was super interactive w the crowd.
Crazy match where Jay retains w the JAY DRILLER.
Taven attacks Jay after, Mark makes the save and the Briscoes challenge the Kingdom to a feud ending tag match - for another time I guess. Great feud.
Got my first look live at Tyson Dux, which is too bad cause he's been around for 15 years and he's fucking awesome. I'd love to have him in the game.
Another guy who shined was TD Thomas. His match vs Jimmy Jacobs was unbelievable. I've never seen TD look that good before. I'd say he's due for an update, but rumor is hrs leaving for an MMA career?
ACH vs Alberto El Patron was everything you'd expect. INSANE crowd interaction (why I love ROH so much) the whole match. ACH does shit I've never seen before. He's due for a sick update with a high level card. Just seeing Alberto live was special, fact that he went all out was a treat. He comes off like a real genuine pro wrestler. It was an honor to see him wrestle live.
Alberto came out after the main event to challenge Lethal (who retained vs. Strong) and send the crowd home happy with a brief but effective speech that earned him a standing O.
Huge matches were set up on this show for ROH Anniversary with big angles: Jay Briscoe (c) vs. Michael Elgin (who beat Mark and tried to maim him after, coaxing Jay to make the save and I to Mike's trap), Hanson vs. Tommoso Ciampa and Jay Lethal (c) vs Alberto El Patron for the TV Title.
This was one of the best shows I've ever seen live. Epic booking throughout and Jay v Bennett, TD Thomas v Jimmy Jacobs, Ciampa vs. Tyson Dux, Taven vs Sydal, ACH vs Alberto and Lethal vs Strong were ALL PPV quality epic matches.
ROH will be back here Sept. 11th and so will we.
Quick results:
- Preshow Match: Cheeseburger def Stokely Hathaway with the shotei/palm strike and a roll up
- ROH World Champion Jay Briscoe def Michael Bennett w/ Maria Kanellis to retain. At one point, Taven got involved and Matt had to make the save. Jay implored Nigel McGuinness to make another match to end the Kingdom
- "War Beard" Hanson def BJ Whitmer with a lariat
- Tommaso Ciampa def Tyson Dux via rolling lariat
Thomas's Retirement Match: Jimmy Jacobs def Tadarius Thomas after two sliced bread pin attempts, 1 End Time, & it finally took a top rope sliced bread to finish the match. Jacobs wouldn't shake TD's hand but did say thank you
- "#Reborn" Matt Sydal def Matt Taven with a shooting star press. Cole tried to interfere late but failed & he walked off during the pinfall.
- The Romantic Touch def Dru Onyx via leapfrog leg drop
- "Unbreakable" Michael Elgin def Mark Briscoe with the Jay Driller. Elgin tried to assault Mark post match. Jay came out and Elgin bailed but he then attacked Jay with the belt from behind. Ciampa and Hanson joined the brawl. Jay got split WIDE open, each challenger as they exit take a turn posing with the ROH World Title.
- Final 2 matches being taped for TV, likely to air on 2/27:
- Alberto El Patrón def ACH via submission with the cross arm breaker
- ROH World Television Champion Jay Lethal w/ Truth Martini def Roderick Strong with the Lethal Injection
