So I let my dogs out in the back yard on this windy night tonight from the upper level of our house. We have a raised deck with about 15 steps leading down to a pretty-good sized fenced area (6-foot chain link). So from my vantage point letting them out in the dark, I can't really see anything.
The meaning of the subject line will become apparent shortly, if it hasn't already.
One dog always comes in quickly. The other one takes her time, so I usually have to call her. Again, I usually do so just from the back door without venturing onto the deck. Tonight she just wasn't coming, so I walked out there to call her.
And there, in the floodlights, I saw it. A 30-foot tree from the vacant lot behind us laying over a section of the fence and in our yard. And a very spooked out German shepherd/rottweiler mix standing at the bottom of the steps looking like "WTF, dude?"
The good news: it missed our shed by about 10 feet and didn't hit any dogs (I'm guessing this happened earlier in the evening). The bad news: now I'm going to have to figure out who owns this lot behind us and go through all the homeowners' insurance hoops. The damage isn't all that bad, really, considering what could have been, so I'm not even all that mad. I'm just dreading dealing with people who aren't going to want to pay for this.
Plus, my wife went to see a show with a friend in Morgantown, West Virginia tonight and they got snowed in out there and are staying at a hotel, so I don't even have anyone here to commiserate with. Except you good people. That's why you're hearing this.
Anyway, happy daylight savings time, y'all.
